Indore/Holkar - Former Indian state, now part of Madhya Pradesh, central India; 8.075 square miles. Its capital, Indore, was also capital of the Central India Agency. It was founded in 1715 and grew rapidly under Maratha dynasty of Holkars which was established in 18th century by Malhar Rao Holkar, an officer of the peshwa; lost much of territory after defeat by Lord Lake 1804; accepted British protectorate 1818. Title: Holkar.

History: In 1728, the Maratha Peshwa of Poona (today Pune) granted what is now the State of Indore to Malhar Rao Holkar, a cavalry commander in his service.

Flag:
The Maharjah Holkar of the Kingdom of Indore has a bicolored flag horizontally divided red over white, with the State arms close to the top, but extending towards the lower stripe.

The flag

Indore had as ruler a prince with the title of "Holkar", but in English maps Indore appeared as the realm of Holkar. (Like Hyderabad was named the Nizam's realm). Ziggioto (1998) shows a long flag red over white with the state emblem to the hoist - I dare say: an extremely complicated emblem.
